Innovation at a Crossroads: Reflections from the 14th Annual ETP Forum
It was an incredible experience participating in this year’s ETP Forum, a gathering that truly sits at the intersection where innovation meets opportunity. As the event enters its 14th year, the backdrop could not be more impressive: with global Exchange-Traded Fund assets surpassing the $10 trillion mark, the energy in the room was palpable. It is fascinating to witness how this industry has evolved, bringing together the brightest minds — from asset owners to family offices — to address the demands of a market that is expanding at a breakneck pace. The Forum highlighted that while ETF launches are continuing briskly, deep insight is more critical than ever to navigate this growth.
I had the distinct honor of moderating the panel “ETF Legal & Share Class Structures: A Regulatory Crossroads.” Navigating the current legal landscape is complex, but incredibly exciting. We dove deep into the surging interest in multi-share class models and the ripple effects of updated SEC guidance. Sharing the stage with industry experts Michael Prendergast (Ultimus), Kip Meadows (Nottingham), Peter Shea (Seward & Kissel), and Pawel Janus (ETFbook) provided a comprehensive look at how recent approvals and compliance issues, such as the Name Rule and the 351 ETF exchange are actively shaping the future of fund formation.
Leaving the forum, one thing is clear: we are at a pivotal moment in investment management. The shift toward more sophisticated structures and the democratization of access to diverse markets proves that we aren’t just watching an industry grow; we are watching it mature. Despite the regulatory hurdles, the path forward is paved with innovation, and it is a thrilling time to be part of the ETF ecosystem.
